Rainy Day Reverie
Reverie

This is either an oil or acrylic painting done circa 1958-1960; I'm a little annoyed at myself for not dating my stuff back then. There can be a special feeling about standing at an open window on a rainy day; I think I caught it here. The picture on the wall over the dresser is supposed to represent the famous 19th century engraving called Vanity, in which a woman is looking at herself in the mirror--from a short distance the combined image becomes a skull. Here, that's about all you can see. It's not really related to the painting's theme; I just thought the young woman might have found it amusing... I never thought of her as being vain, herself.
