Somewhere back in the 60s, I think, the paperback publisher of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles held a competition for the cover of an upcoming edition. I don't remember any details, but I did this painting after reading the stories, feeling that it captured something of what I thought the stories meant to me. I never submitted it, and I don't know now who won. Somebody like the Dillons, I'd guess—something less illustrative in style. No, the man's face is not that of Ray Bradbury, then or later! It was supposed to represent one of the characters, I believe. I'll have to re-read the book again to see if I can figure out who. The cover image, with the title, is roughly how I imagine it might have appeared back then; the typeface might be fancied up some in a more recent edition.
