The original drawing isn't in sepia, but it seemed to work when I tried it out after playing with the scanned image a bit. As with the mermaid, I was attempting to do something with her eyes that emphasized her genetic heritage, in this case partially equine. Her hair develops mane-like characteristics as it approaches the equine torso. I may have been thinking of other things in front, where she's definitely human. The ears were a nice touch, though, if I do say so myself — not too high and horsey, not too low and flat.
